Turner Foundation has been collaborating with the Jefferson County Youth Council (JCYC) for over 15 years in support of youth development and leadership opportunities for young people in and around Monticello, Florida. Most recently, JCYC worked to reactivate existing solar panels at the high school; studied the quality of the water from three Floridan Aquifer wells through hands-on investigations as well as organizes community education events around water conservation and sources of ground water contamination; created a master plan for Wakulla Springs that includes mitigating threats, balancing tourism and preservation and making improvements that will lend to the long-term viability of the springs; and organized a day for their fellow students that showcases the community’s natural resources and the organizations that protect and maintain them to engage their peers in more hands-on involvement with local conservation efforts, in addition to a number of conservation-related field trips.
