With the belief that knowledge is power, Ted Turner created the Captain Planet Foundation (CPF) in 1990 to educate and empower children on how to make a positive impact on their own lives and the health of their communities.

Laura Turner Seydel, Turner's daughter and chairperson of CPF, echoes her father's sentiments: "By encouraging hands-on, real world learning experiences, as we do at Captain Planet Foundation, we are giving our children an invaluable gift; a greater understanding of the natural world and how to serve it. We want them to inherit a healthy, livable planet."

Children playing in pondThe mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to support hands-on environmental projects for youth in grades K-12. The foundation's objective is to encourage innovative programs that enable children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively as environmental stewards. Through ongoing education, CPF believes that children can play a vital role in preserving our precious natural resources for future generations.

CPF gives children the opportunity to become active participants in discovering lasting solutions to issues that affect their entire community. The greenhouse effect, global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, toxic and radioactive wastes, and over population are just part of the litany of environmental dangers. To adults, the magnitude of the situation seems overwhelming and disheartening. Fortunately, "hopeless" is not part of a child's vocabulary. CPF represents a unique opportunity to make a positive contribution to our vanishing resources and to pass on a message of inspiration to the next generation of business and government policy makers.

Captain Planet FlyingThe Captain Planet Foundation is a core grantee of the Turner Foundation and is located in Atlanta, GA.

The landscape of northern New Mexico is at once stark and scenic. The plains roll far into the distance to meet the snow-capped eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
